In Memoriam

This section is dedicated to the fallen members of the Jersey City Police Department.

These officers gave the ultimate sacrifice while protecting and serving the citizens of Jersey City.

They were our friends and heroes who were too soon taken away.

It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived.”
-Viviam Eney, Survivor

In Memoriam, to our fallen Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Vincent Santiago, EOW:  07/13/2014

“Our hearts are heavy with the news that Patrolman Melvin Santiago lost his life in the line of duty early Sunday, 07/13/2014.  Only 6 months on the job, Patrolman Santiago had already proven himself to be a proud member of the Jersey City Police Department.  Patrolman Santiago knew the risks associated with this job, yet he put himself in front of danger in order to keep Jersey City safe.  Words cannot adequately express our feelings about this senseless tragedy.  We respectfully ask that every member of the Jersey City community join with us in giving our thoughts and prayers to Patrolman Santiago and his family.”

“Yesterday, Patrolman Santiago was murdered in cold blood while protecting the people of Jersey City.  All indications are that his killer had set out to commit such a heinous act simply for the notoriety it would bring to him.  As law enforcement officers, we proudly represent and serve the blue line, metaphorically and literally. The fine men and women who serve and protect our community are the line of defense between good and evil. Patrolman Santiago bravely served Jersey City with honor, dignity, and courage, and his legacy will be marked as a true hero, such as he deserves.

We are disappointed by some media outlets’ decision to posthumously bring the murderer the attention he sought, as well as the uprising of a shrine. What kind of society do we live in where memorializing a violent murderer is acceptable?  Our hope in the coming days is that all attention will be directed towards the bravery of our lost brother, Det. Melvin Santiago.”
